“The Cervélo R3 SL is quite possibly the fastest bike that we have ever tested” - Cycling Plus “Quite possibly the most perfect bike to ever grace the tarmac” - Men’s Health
It’s amazing how many frames claim to be the world’s lightest. Sometimes it’s the weight without paint, or in size 43, or without derailleur hanger, sometimes the claim is simply completely made up. At the same time, the one manufacturer that actually produces the lightest production frame according to independent magazine tests never makes that claim. Why don’t we? Because to us weight is not the primary goal; and because frankly we think the “lightest” claim has been so overdone that it’s got to stop.
To start with the first issue, we don’t focus on weight during the design process. We focus on stiffness, strength, comfort, and safety. Those are the frame characteristics that really matter, and we know that thanks to our superior engineering team, we can design the frames with the best combination of these features. And we know that if we do that correctly, we can achieve all these goals and still make an extremely light frame – even the lightest. But an up-front focus on the weight leads designers to water down the other – much more important – requirements.
So here it is, we have taken the R3 platform – a frame that already offered an incredible stiffness-to-weight ratio, and made it even lighter without sacrificing any of our standards regarding strength and stiffness. That makes the R3 SL the ultimate frame for next year’s Paris-Roubaix, as well as any epic rides you may have in mind. And it is naturally the perfect platform to build a superlight no-holds-barred bike around, undercutting the UCI weight limit even more easily than our other frames.

| | Squoval™ tube shapes – With state-of-the-art Finite Element Analysis software and Cervélo-developed custom software tools, we can more effectively evaluate tube shapes and how they should change throughout the frame. This research led to innovations such as the Squoval™ cross section, as well as the multi-shaped toptube and multi-shaped asymmetrical seattube.
R3 Seatstays – Through testing and analysis (in particular with our custom developed software tools), every last gram was squeezed out of the R3 seatstays without sacrificing any strength. It passes the highest impact, fatigue and road vibration test levels in the industry as well as the “Cancellara-test” on the cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix.
Oversized bottom bracket area – The increased volume of the bottom bracket area provides a great STW. The smooth contours of the BB volume also help to transfer the loads better.
Front boomerang construction – Monocoque frames typically have a weight penalty, while frames with lugs can have lower impact strength, as each lug joint is a potential separation point. Cervélo’s patent pending boomerang design allows continuous fibers to run from toptube to headtube to downtube, thereby greatly enhancing the frontal impact strength without encountering the lay-up control problems of a full monocoque design.
Further lay-up optimization – With eight engineers working on carbon fiber projects, Cervélo has a wealth of in-house knowledge about how to increase the performance of carbon frames. The R3 SL is the latest iteration of our lay-up optimization, allowing us to further increase the STW. |
| | Lighter frame - The R3 may have been the lightest frame of the ProTour in 2006, the R3 SL is even lighter.
Wolf SL fork – The R3 SL comes standard with the Wolf SL fork, one of the lightest forks but more importantly, one of the strongest at any weight. |

| | The downtube and chainstays of a bicycle frame mostly see lateral bending, even if the frame as a whole is in torsion. Yet virtually all frames on the market sport round or oval downtubes and chainstays. Excellent shapes to counter torsion of those tubes, but not lateral bending. A box section is the best shape to counter lateral bending, which is why we use a box-inspired shape on the Soloist Carbon chainstays (of course the downtube on the Soloist Carbon is TrueAero-shaped for aerodynamic reasons). On the R3, we squared off the box shape even more, leaving only a small ovalization of the shape to boost its buckling strength. This squared-off oval, or Squoval, significantly increases the stiffness-to-weight ratio (STW) of the shape in lateral bending and is used in the chainstays and the downtube. The front and rear of the toptube also use the Squoval shape, but it transitions to oval in the center to counteract the torsional loading in that section. Smartwall® for Carbon Upon hearing Smartwall, most people immediately think of Cervélo’s method to obtain excellent lateral stiffness in an TrueAero tube. But the Smartwall principle is universally applicable, not just on aero tubing. After the tube shapes are optimized, the lay-up allows us to further refine the character of the bike. In fact, Squoval tubes are very well suited for the Smartwall application as they have two sides that are very far removed from the central plane – i.e. adding even a small amount of extra material there increases the lateral stiffness significantly. To properly distribute the loads from the Smartwall section into the rest of the tubes, the additional plies are feathered. |
 | | Our road bike geometry is a little different than most companies', but the important thing is that it works. Before Team CSC rode on Cervélos, it used a frame that came in 12 sizes yet several riders needed custom-made frames because none of the 12 fit. Now, they use five sizes (there is no CSC rider who needs the 61cm frame) and there isn't a single rider on the roster who needs a custom-made frame.
We see the same with our dealers, thanks to the logical size distribution customers are almost always able to find their preferred position on a Cervélo. No need for customs, certainly no need for women-specific geometry (to learn more about the fallacies of women-specific geometry, please check out this Knowledge Base article). The Knowledge Base also provides more information about our general road bike geometry philosophy.

| | The R3-SL is available as a frameset or with the DuraAce Team kit. Because Team CSC is so focused on equipment, it uses many different parts depending on the race course so there is no such thing as THE team kit. The Team kit we have put together reflects a few choices that the team makes for maximum durability, most notably the Ultegra cassette that you will find on all of their training and about half of their race wheels. We figure that just like it is for Team CSC, durability is a more important feature on your training wheels than saving a few grams. Speaking of wheels, for the complete team race kit, speak to your Cervélo dealer about a set of Zipp carbon wheels with a DuraAce cassette for racing. | Part | DuraAce Team kit | | Fork | Easton EC-90 SL | | Seatpost | Syntace P6 27.2mm | | Shift/Brake Levers | Shimano DuraAce STI | | Front Derailleur | Shimano DuraAce | | Rear Derailleur | Shimano DuraAce | | Cassette | Shimano DuraAce 10-sp 12-25 | | Chain | Shimano Ultegra | | Brake Calipers | Shimano DuraAce | | Crankset | FSA SLK Light MegaExo Carbon | | Bottom Bracket | FSA SLK MegaExo | | Headset | FSA | | Stem | 3T ARX Team | | Handlebars | FSA SLK compact / 3T Ergosum Team | | Saddle | Selle Italia Gel Flow | | Wheels | Hed Bastogne | | Tires | Rubino Pro Slick | | Specs may change without notice. |
